Project Scope
Building people for life and living: Vocational and Career Development (VCD) is located in the eastern state of Orissa, India. VCD was officially initiated in early 2002 but has been carrying out the work of helping individuals reach their potential in life since 1989. Through career education, guidance and counseling at the grass roots level, VCD has been able to help people engage in occupations that they never could have imagined. Many times these careers are across caste lines that traditionally are never crossed in a lifetime!

eMi² has been asked to assist VCD with the development of an overall campus master plan. A portion of the eleven acre campus is developed and contains existing VCD facilities, while the rest of the campus is undeveloped and contains a dairy farm, two fish ponds, and a kitchen garden which is maintained by the children and staff. The existing facilities include a residence hall, currently housing 56 children, and a school building, serving per-nursery to grade 12. With the ever pressing need of accommodating displaced children from the area, the existing facilities are inadequate to serve the function of VCD. The project will involve an overall campus survey and conceptual architectural and civil engineering design for new or renovated facilities including: school building addition, residence hall addition, kitchen and dining hall, vocational training center, and teacher training center.

The trip may also include a visit to a second, smaller site to design an expanded facility for the Jisu Prem English School, located in a village in southeast Orissa. The project trip will be based out of Kolkata, center of Bengali culture and home to Mother Teresa’s Sisters of Charity, and will include time to see some of the city which was the capital of British India until the beginning of the 19th century. Come and join our team!
