Project Volunteers join 10 – 14 day conceptual design project trips which eMi² coordinates at three seasons in the year: February – March, June – July, and September – October. There are typically 8 to 10 of these trips per year, each one a different project type for a different client ministry at a different location in South Asia. You can see our next project trips on our upcoming projects list, and get the basics for trips in the planning stages at next change. The total cost to participate on a project team depends on the specific project location and which country you’re coming from - $US 2000-3000 is a typical range.
To be considered for a Project Volunteer position, submit your "EMI Passport" form to eMi². (See below.) Name the specific project you are interested in or the future season in which you would like to participate. Accepting the project leader’s invitation and submitting other critical information will indicate your commitment to join the team as a Project Volunteer. The project leader will make the necessary logistical preparations for you to meet the rest of the project team at the rendezvous city in South Asia: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, etc. After an opening team meeting, you will travel to the project site and meet the client ministry. Then some really amazing things happen...
The surveyors survey the site area to make a map of the land. The architects give the client what may be their first taste of a thoughtful, professional consultation in order to develop the brief / programme. The engineers are assessing options and potential solutions for water supply and wastewater disposal. Design professionals’ experience and discipline are rubbing off on interns, the interns’ exposure to the culture and environment of South Asia is rubbing off on volunteers. The project leader is keeping tabs on the project synergy, helping communication and prioritizing what is important. The architects are on their second plan draft now and the client is beginning to see it coming to life.
The sacrificial service of client ministry workers, and the vision and experiences of the ministry leader are impacting everyone. Now the whole team is gathered to present the concept and the client is listening and asking questions and giving key feedback. Now we are all praying together, committing once again this project and each other to the Lord. You reflect as you sit on the train with the team leaving the client’s town, how so much could have happened in just a week or so...
